About The Book
Many believe the key to success is a super sized ego. “Wrong,” says Pat Williams. “The key to true success is a humble spirit”. In his new book Humility, Pat shares stories of people from all walks of life who have achieved the pinnacle of success – and the secret of their success is humility.

In ten chapters, Pat Williams, leadership expert and senior vice president of the NBA’s Orlando Magic, demonstrates how you too can live as a role model, a hero of humility. You will be inspired and motivated to spread the contagious, infectious character trait throughout your area of influence. . .while coming to understand that genuine humility not only gives you an edge in your career and relationships; it also helps you develop a closer bond with your heavenly Father.

Book Review
Humility is the 103rd book written by Pat Williams. I’ve known Pat for a number of years and interviewed him countless times as he keeps writing home-runs. However, while I will admit it’s hard to pick an all-time favorite book written by Pat, Humility ranks high on the list. A seminary professor once said no one will ever write a good book on humility. “In order to do so” said the professor, “one must set aside all humility, while saying ‘look at how humble I am'”. In my opinion, Pat Williams is just the man to write a book on this subject.

You won’t find Pat talking about himself in Humility. Instead, in his usual writing style, you find story after story of real-life-people exemplifying the quality of humility. In the opening pages Pat writes, “Courage is always a choice. And so is humility”. He later writes, “The longer I’ve lived and the more I’ve learned, the more I’m convinced that humility may be the most important trait any human being can possess”.

This book is filled with so many treasures, it’s hard to pick out just a few to write about. However, I will tell you this is not just a time of cheerleading. Pat not only highlights lives of those who set good examples, but he outlines lives of poor examples – including Tiger Woods. Then in true humility, Pat even reveals how he learned personal lessons about humility. I applaud Pat for his transparency when he boldly writes, “I proceeded to dig a hole with my big, fat, arrogant mouth. My arrogance had cost me the award”.

It’s also worth noting this is not just a book full of stories about humble men and women. Pat goes one step further with a helpful list outlining “Seven Traits of a Humble Leader”. Then near the end of the book he offers suggestions on “how to choose humility and how to acquire the skill of being authentically humble”. Topping this list is, “Make a decision to stop defending yourself and justifying yourself”. Humility truly is the Secret Ingredient to Success and great gem tucked away in the book reads, “A humble leader builds a culture of humility – and organizations of humility can achieve great things”.

We live in a world where many are shouting “Look at me, look at me!” However, if you want to have an impact on your environment, humility is always the better road. If you’re looking for one book to read on leadership, life and Christian growth for the year, I highly recommend this book by Pat Williams. You will not be disappointed.
