Written in a similar format to his Lifestyle of the Prophet book, James Goll provides another incredible resource for those with questions about prayer. Many years ago E.M. Bounds wrote;
“The Church is looking for better methods; God is looking for better men. What the Church needs to-day is not more machinery or better, not new organizations or more and novel methods, but men whom the Holy Ghost can use — men of prayer, men mighty in prayer”.
Originally published in a book entitled Preacher and Prayer in 1907, and then republished as Power Through Prayer, those words still ring true today. God is looking for people who are mighty in prayer.
Much has been written on the subject of prayer. In this day it is of vital importance we not only know how to pray, but that we are positioned at our post. The Lifestyle of a Watchman provides an important key in helping individuals find their place in the Body of Christ when it comes to prayer. James Goll devotes one entire section of this 21 day journey to just that – Finding Your Post. Day 14 is a rallying call for the troops to battle which also outlines the importance of “Finding Your Post”. Goll writes; “Too many intercessors never discover their distinct calling because they are too busy thinking someone else’s calling would be more rewarding. We will only find fulfillment in pursuing the particular calling that God has chosen for you” (Page 148). He then outlines 12 specific “posts” intercessors are called to. I’ve read a number of books on prayer and even intercessory prayer. However, I have never found such a succinct list of different areas intercessors are called to for prayer. Day 14 is well worth the admission price of buying this book. If you’ve struggled with your “post in prayer”, Day 14 will help you find your position with clarity.
Through the years James Goll has written a number of books. While those that have gone before are good, I believe he’s really hit his stride the past few years. It started with The Lifestyle of the Prophet when he wrote more about the intimacy needed in prayer with Christ. The same concept spills over into this new book, The Lifestyle of a Watchman. Many times intercessors believe effective prayer must be loud. However, when we keep in mind that Jesus found a “quiet place” to pray, and Elijah heard the voice of God in the stillness, we soon discover it all starts from a place of stillness and quiet. Goll covers the importance of quietness on Day 11 when he writes;
“You will only be able to make a difference in your world by remaining firmly rooted in the secret place with God. Too many of us miss the treasures that can be found only in long stretches of silent or almost-silent contemplation at the feet of the Lord. As watchmen, we must learn to tap into this inner source of peace and fortitude. We must learn to ‘practice the presence of God,’ as the seventeenth-century monk Brother Lawrence put it”.
While some might lean toward putting The Lifestyle of the Watchman alongside The Lifestyle of the Prophet, I would caution against that. While both books are well worth the read, they deal with different callings. If you’re looking for a book to help fine tune your ear to what God is saying in this day, and take your position as a Watchman on the Wall for Him in prayer, you will not be disappointed with this book. The 21 day journey found in The Lifestyle of the Watchman will not only encourage you to stand watch, but will strengthen you in that watch as well.
