Remembering A Legend – February 17, 2011
A Tribute To Dale Earnhardt – Rest In Peace
It’s hard to believe that 10 years have past since the tragic death of Dale Earnhardt on the final laps of the Daytona 500. To quote Charles Dickens, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. In the closing laps right after an extended red flag, newly acquired driver for DEI, Michael Waltrip, won his first official NASCAR race of his career. The biggest race of the year, the Daytona 500. Unknown to Michael as he celebrated in Victory Lane, his boss and his mentor who gave him the courage and confidence he needed, died just moments before Michael took the checkered flag for the win.
On February 18, 2001, the racing icon and legend known to his competitors as The Intimidator died doing what he did best – Going fast and turning left.
As the Gatorade Duels just finished on TV, it seems appropriate that General Sarge decided to pay tribute to the racing legend Dale Earnhadrt. As General Sarge honors and pays tribute to Dale Earnhardt Senior, it’s also worth noting that no other sport honors the Army and all branches of the military like NASCAR does.
