Day 94: Application Error

Application Error – April 21, 2011

Sometimes little things, turn into big things, which then effect a lot of people! Such was – and is – the case for today. It all began this morning when I started receiving Twitter messages and email from people wondering why the link for the Month of the Military Child: Build-A-Bear giveaway wasn’t working.

As you can see, it even baffled General Sarge. When you clicked on the link, and still click on the link right now, you get a window that says “Application Error”. I did a lot of checking on my end first to make sure it wasn’t something I’d done wrong. After looking at settings, connecting to email accounts and trying a few other things, I discovered the Application Error wasn’t on my end, it was actually on the end of the program I’m using to take the entries for the Build-A-Bear giveaway.

After searching a number of sites and sending some messages on Twitter, Facebook and email’s to tech support for ContactMe, I found out not only was their site down, but a lot of Internet sites were down as a result of an Amazon server problem. You can read more about what happened in this article…

The World’s Largest Social Networks?

While the problem is still effecting a number of sites, IT and other tech people all over the world are working to correct the issue.

Two Paws Up To ContactMe From General Sarge

I must admit I was frustrated this morning when I couldn’t find the answers as to what was going on with the site. Especially since we launched the Month of the Military Child teddy bear giveaway just yesterday. The response has been great and I know others were trying to enter the contest again today. After a few tech support emails I then received an email from Jerry, the Director for Service and Retention with ContactMe. He was very understanding about my frustration and it turns out he is also a military child himself! So he even understands and is appreciative of General Sarge and the Build-A-Bear giveaway too. After exchanging a few emails, all is smoothed over and I do hope we both encouraged one another.

Rest assured, not only are the fine people at ContactMe, including Jerry, working hard to fix the problem, but they are also working with their customers too. This Amazon server problem is causing problems for many people. In the end, Jerry has been very gracious and is even now helping us out here at General Sarge HQ so we’ll be able to keep track of all our contacts using their ContactMe program to it’s full extent.

As for the giveaway, please be patient. Understand that Jerry along with the ContactMe people are working hard to get their program up and running once again. Hopefully that will be very soon. In the meantime, if you want to check the status on when the services will be back up you can find out here – Heroku-Status UpdatesAs a matter of fact, I just checked the status and it looks like the servers are now slowly starting to come back up.

So, once again, sorry for the inconvenience to those who tried to enter the Month of the Military Child giveaway today. But be assured that I will let you know when all is well and you can start entering again.

  1. General Sarge’s giveawy has the power to shut down entire servers, now that is one tough bear.. 😉

It must have been, still is, very frustrating for you and your project staff to have this technical glitch right now at this point in the contest. I am sure everyone understands that these are circumstances out of your control and will try again in the morning when, hopefully, all will be running smoothly.

It is nice to read that you received good customer service from Contactme and worked out the issues..

Speaking of workouts, Drill Sargent Buff Bear is working on a really nice program plan for you and your followers to get them “combat” ready or beach ready, whichever the case may be.. Will keep you posted..

    1. Hey Janet!

You know it! I worked hard to become a General and we General’s are tough. Don’t be fooled by my nice furry exterior. I mean business. Also, as you said, I’m so glad my human-owners Dad was able to work with ContactMe. It was even great to discover that Jerry from ContactMe is a military kid himself!

I can hardly wait to hear about the plans DS Buff has for us. We’re getting ready for the P90X-Bear Dare!

  2. I saw loads of sites fall the other day when the Amazon servers went down, such as Foursquare, which my human-owner uses to let me know what she’s up to and I use to show where great places I’m visiting, but thankfully everything seems to be back up now, fingers crossed 😉
